I never thought the day would come. I was riding with Doc out to hunt at Sunrize Acres! When I saw the sign, I felt a lump in my throat and a tingle down my spine. Can ya feel it, I say Yowza! We all met up, signed in and got our stuff together. Time to load up and head out. The setting could not have been better, there was a misty type fog hanging there that just added to the atmosphere. We went past a herd of deer that seemed too massive to count, Then saw a herd of porkers heading out. Then we saw rams, this place is just awesome!
We went past a herd of deer that seemed too massive to count, Then saw a herd of porkers heading out. Then we saw rams, this place is just awesome! They dropped me off at a blind and I settled in and felt my senses come alive. I watched squirrels and birds for about an hour or so then I saw a movement that was big. I felt the rush of adrenelin, big time! Out of the misty field came not a wild boar, but Ta-tonka! I have seen buffalos before, I even cared forthem for the DNR for a year or two. Seeing them come out of the fog that morning was very moving to say the least.
After a while some rams came through at the same distance, about 75 yards. Not long after that they picked me up and went up to regroup. Most folks, including Stacey had already scored. So we went out of a spot and stalk. My only experience with wild boars was on the Ted Nugent Game where the boars attack for little or no reason so I was a bit nervous. Big Jim had his sidearm and I had my 44 for a backup so I was ok with it. We spotted some hogs laying in a brush pile and made a stalk on them. There were 3 of us and one scored when the hogs came out. Shawn got a hit on one and we started off following the herd. We snuck up on them again and Shawn got a better hit on his hog. I picked one out and released. The arrow looked as if it was too far back, but I had good blood on it.
Back to the woods we went trying to circle around deep enough in the woods so we didn't spook the herd any more. Talk about a hike! Big Jim really gave me a good workout! As we snuck up on them one more time I spotted my wounded boar at the back. He was really lagging behind and I could see blood on his belly. He gave me a broadside shot but it was quartering toward me. About that time Rick said that my xbow should break the shoulder at this range.
So I flipped off the safety, took aim and at that point the boar stepped ahead 2 steps and turned slightly. A wide open, quartering away shot. Needless to say, I released and saw blood the instant the arrow caught him right behind the shoulder. He barreled off at a mad run that time and after he got about 25 yards, he collided head on into the tree you see in the pic. He was dead before I got to him. What a rush!
